Nissan is expanding the line of electric vehicles with the 2022 Ariya SUV, which will be sold in the United States in 2021. Ariya will join the leaf hatchback in the Nissan showroom and will offer up to 300 miles of Driving Range, which beats a maximum of leaves from 226.

Ariya’s design is a shift from the current sharp corner line seen on many Nissan vehicles. The low and broad stance of Ariya distinguishes it from Rogue and gives it a sportier look. Two different battery sizes will be offered – 63.0-kWh batteries are standard, and larger 87.0-kWh packs are optional — as well as either front or all drive wheels.

A number of driver assistance features, Infotainment technology, and convenience items will be included here, helping Ariya 2022 compete with the same size EV crossovers, such as Tesla Model Y and Hyundai Kona Electric.

What’s new for 2022 Ariya?

The Ariya is an all-new vehicle for Nissan. The Film features the new semi-autonomous drive system Nissan (ProPilot 2.0), which debuted at the Japanese market Nissan Skyline sedan. The Ariya delivers up to 300 miles of Driving Range, but only when equipped with optional dual-front/rear-motor drive configurations and a larger 87.0-kWh battery pack.

2022 Nissan Ariya Price

Nissan hasn’t released the price for a long-term 87.0-kWh model, but the basic version with a smaller battery pack will start around $40,000. That puts it on top of the leaves and other affordable EVs but below the base price of the Y model. We of the mindset that to successfully switch from gasoline to electricity, the range is key, and if our estimate at the correct price, a larger battery pack could be a great value.

2022 Nissan Ariya performance

Nissan drew from the features developed in other automobiles, including the GT-R sports car Torque-Split system, to offer an optional all-wheel-drive through dual-front/rear-electric-motor configurations.

We estimate that all-wheel-drive Ariya will zip from zero to 60 mph in less than 5.0 seconds, an achievement similar to the Higher-end electric vehicle. The front-wheel-drive model will become slower, but we still hope to offer very large acceleration which is a characteristic of a powertrain EV.

Nissan says Ariya offers up to 300 miles of Driving Range per charge, and if that turns out to be true, it will simply step upwards from the maximum range of 226 miles.

The same-sized vehicles include the Jaguar I-Pace and the Audi E-Tron, which have 234 and 204 miles of range, respectively. The main rivals Tesla offer the claimed range of more than 300 miles. Ariya will be able to charge at home at 110-or 240-volt outlets as well as in general charging stations and even DC Fast-charging ports.

2022 Nissan Ariya MPG

The EPA’s estimated fuel economy is not yet available to Ariya, Nissan also did not release its claimed MPGe figures. When Ariya gets closer to start, the information is likely to be available. We also hope to test Ariya our self-200-mile highway route, which allows us to evaluate the efficiency of the real world.

2022 Nissan Ariya Interior

The Interior of Ariya looks futuristic and minimal. Nissan seems to have discarded every key possible in pursuit of a smooth dash that favors the sleek look to match the exterior design. Although Nissan claimed that Ariya’s cabin is not like the traditional automotive interior, its minimalistic theme seems to be the only unique trait. Not that the cabin doesn’t look like a great place to spend time.

A flat, low floor is said to enhance the broad feeling inside, and Nissan has incorporated comfortable zero-gravity seats into its design.

Nissan also reveals details about the infotainment system and connectivity features, and it looks pretty good. Dual 12.3-inch displays serve as both digital gauge clusters and Infotainment screens. Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and in-Dash navigation should all be standard features.

The concept of Ariya shown in 2019 has features that allow the car to sync with the driver’s schedule, so it can pre-heat or pre-cool the interior while it is parked and charging, and therefore does not draw on the power of the battery.

Nissan also showcased the technology that allows the driver to use their phone to park Ariya automatically from nearby locations using ProPilot remote Park, a system similar to the features of the Tesla Smart Summon. Nissan has not said if this feature will make it to the production model.

2022 Nissan Ariya Safety Features

Both the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), as well as the Highway Safety Insurance Agency (IIHS), have conducted an accident test at Ariya, but Nissan is bundling in many driver-assistance features. The Ariya will feature ProPilot 2.0, the second-generation Nissan ProPilot Technology semi-autonomous, as an optional feature.

The system allows the driver to release their hands from the steering wheel in a particular driving scenario. While we haven’t tested this new setup, we like the original ProPilot system when we were using it in 2017 – and if that’s an indication of how the 2.0 version will show, our expectations are high. Key safety features include:

  • Standard automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection;
  • Standard departure-line warnings with the help of the track;
  • Adaptive cruise control available with semi-autonomous driving mode;
